Contemporary farmhouse extension
This project creates a contemporary extension to a traditional Scottish farmhouse, providing a self-contained ancillary accommodation while maintaining a strong connection with the character of the original property and its rural setting.
The extension adopts a deliberately modern architectural language, with black timber cladding creating a simple, understated form that complements rather than imitates the existing farmhouse. Copper gutters and downpipes provide a warm contrast to the dark external finishes and will develop a natural patina over time, allowing the building to mature within its landscape.
Internally, generous areas of glazing bring natural light deep into the accommodation and frame views across the surrounding countryside. A dramatic rooflight introduces additional daylight from above, helping to create a bright and spacious interior centred around an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area.
The result is a distinctive yet sympathetic addition to the traditional farmhouse, providing comfortable independent accommodation while retaining a close physical and visual relationship with the main house and the wider landscape.
