Renovation of a Victorian Castle

In 1878 Walter Bergius, a successful naval engineer, built the home to impress his soon-to-be wife. He based the design on a building he admired in Morocco.

Our clients purchased the home in 2022 and although it was unsuitable for modern living they wanted to give a new lease of life to this magnificent building. Nicholas Lindsay Architects (NLA) were appointed to carry out a measured survey and prepare designs to improve the flow of the layout and remove the dark, gloomy corridors. Following a short design period, NLA obtained both planning and building warrant consents from the local authority allowing works to commence on site. The clients appointed a local building firm, Sinclair Joinery and Construction, who worked tirelessly over a 4-month period to bring our ideas to life. The works were featured on George Clarke’s Building Home in 2025.
